Medical anthropologist Sidney Ross Singer and his colleagues theorized that conventional brassieres may contribute to the development of breast cancer because they constrict the lymph glands, which are the "garbage collectors" of the body. If lymph flow is restricted, it is difficult for toxins to be removed from the breast area and, over time, those toxins may accumulate and, in turn, promote disease.
