Crohn's disease is an autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system attacks the intestines, causing severe inflammation. This often results in pain, diarrhea or constipation, and other disabling symptoms. Steroids or other strong drugs that suppress the immune system typically are used. However, some studies have shown an elemental diet is at least as effective as these drugs in stopping Crohn's attacks, while being safer. Enteral nutrition has been shown safe and effective in both adults and children.
