3M long had internal concerns about chemicals

The Star Tribune report said that some 3M scientists worried in 1983 that the chemicals' structure "give rise to concern for environmental safety." It also said the compounds, known as fluorochemicals, "are even more resistant to degradation" than chemicals such as PCBs and the pesticide DDT.
