Dried fruits in the Mediterranean diet reduce weight gain
Omschrijving
People who consume the Mediterranean diet with a high content of dried fruits gain less weight than those who do not consume dried fruits. This is one of the results of a study carried out by the PREDIMED Network (Healthy Diets in the Early Prevention of Chronic Illnesses) in a total of 16 Spanish health clinics, and coordinated by Professor Ángel Martínez from the University of Navarra.
This project, which began in 2003 in order to show the benefits of a healthy diet in the prevention of chronic illnesses, is one of the 16 general research areas which will be financed by the Ministry of Health and Consumption over the course of four years (2007-2010). During this time, PREDIMED will increase its spectrum of study to include the properties of the Mediterranean diet in the prevention of colon and rectal cancer, stomach, breast and lung cancer, as well as its role against mental degeneration, dementia, osteoporosis, cataracts and diabetes.
Participants in the study, currently a total of 5,205 persons considered to be at high-risk for heart attacks, go to educational sessions every three months, in groups or individually. At the same time, they receive self-help materials and -in two of the three groups -free supplies of extra-virgin olive oil and dried fruits. The third group is assigned a diet low in fat. At the end of this process, detailed information will be obtained on some 9,000 persons, who will have received a complete education on healthy eating.
