Mammography screening inefficient for breast cancer prevention

Omschrijving
Mammography screening inefficient for breast cancer prevention While population mammographic screening may be moderately effective in western (mostly Caucasian) women, we cannot translate this directly to the Hong Kong setting where disease incidence is much lower and the age profile of patients differ (i.e. more younger Hong Kong women tend to be increasingly diagnosed as suffering from breast cancer, based on preliminary anecdotal observations).

This is because a lower incidence means a lower prevalence of disease at the time of screening, which in turn affects the performance of the screening test (in this case, mammography) when evaluated on the population level. Thus a lot more healthy women would need to undergo X-ray of the breasts, compared to western populations, in order to detect one real case of cancer (while generating many falsely positive mammogram test results). Mass mammography screening will likely be an inefficient appropriation of scarce health care dollars.
