Title: Artificial Cornea
Offers Better Results for Infants, Some Blind Patients
Url: http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/pr/news/story.cfm?id=1296
Description: Infants and adults who are
blind due to a cloudy or damaged cornea are seeing some remarkable results thanks to a new
version of an artificial implant that takes the place of the cornea, the clear covering of
the eye that serves as our window on the world. The results of operations involving the
first infants and children in the world to receive the device, performed by physicians at
the University of Rochester Eye Institute and a colleague at Johns Hopkins University, are
being announced at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Las
Vegas.
The results, though based on a small number
of patients, point to a new option for dramatically improving the vision of a group of
people for whom traditional cornea transplants usually fail. The new work, supported in
part by Research to Prevent Blindness, mirrors similar success in adult patients that was
reported by the Rochester team this summer.

"In our clinical trial, there was significantly improved lung function and symptom
scores in patients who used ASHMI," said Dr. Li. "There was a beneficial
immunoregulatory effect on Th1/Th2 balance. This study indicates that ASHMI may be an

Description: Honing op een wond doet
wonderen".

Title: Stemming the rising tide of
yeast infections
Url: http://www1.umn.edu/umnnews/Feature_Stories/Stemming_the_rising_tide_of_yeast_infections.html
Description: University researchers have
discovered how the yeast that causes mild vaginal infections can become resistant to
drugs, a transformation that leads to 10,000 deaths in the United States every year. Their
work sets the stage for the development of new and better antifungal drugs. The yeast,
known as Candida, lives in about 80 percent of people and is normally kept in check by the
immune system. But in those with immune systems weakened by AIDS, chemotherapy or
immunosuppressive drugs, the yeast can produce serious infections. Doctors use the few
powerful antifungal drugs in their arsenal to beat back the attack, but with
drug-resistant yeast so prevalent, they lose the battle about 30 to 50 percent of the
time.
